RTG50
– Recovered Tyre Gravel as 50mm chips – is a quality
controlled product, derived directly from the chipping plant used
to process tyres for the cement industry and offers the landfill
industry an alternative material as a leachate drainage blanket
saving finite aggregate resources.
The
use of tyres in landfill engineering is not new, and in the past
has focused on the use of either whole (loose-tipped or baled) or
shredded tyres. The EU Landfill Directive has now been fully implemented
and whole and shredded tyres are banned from disposal in landfill.
Recent indications from DEFRA however, suggest that the European
Commission considers the engineering use of such secondary materials
to represent recovery, which means that the construction of a leachate
drainage layer from RTG50 falls outside the requirements of the
Landfill Directive.
Against
this background, Sapphire brings a new approach to the use of end
of life tyres for landfill engineering.
Recovered
– the re-use of end of life tyres as a replacement for landfill
drainage engineering replaces the reliance on virgin aggregates.
Tyres
– the collection and processing of end of life tyres from
the UK waste stream is supported by fully EA compliant documentation
with proof of legal disposal.
Gravel
– continual high levels of process control, underwritten by
an ISO 14001 compliant management system, ensures the production
of a consistent 50mm product, ideally suited for use within an engineering
environment.
