Tyres are designed to ensure safety and performance for drivers and passengers in all types of road vehicles. They are designed to be indestructible through the manufacture of different resilient components such as steel and rubber.
Around 200 components are used to make a tyre. These different components ensure that the tyres can withstand many different impacts and pressures from the vehicles they are carrying and the roads they are travelling along.
When tyres become worn and reach their end of life, these components make disposal of the tyre more difficult:
The actual material is not bio-degradable.
The tyres cannot be returned to the individual components.
These elements – so vital when in use – present considerable difficulties when tyres have reached the end of their useful lives and require disposal.
